DIY Flowers By The Bucket

DIY flowers are a great way to have beautiful, locally grown flowers with a personal touch, without breaking the bank.  Beginning in 2024, we will no longer be providing DIY buckets for weddings. We have reached a time in our lives where we would like more flexible schedules without being tied down to weddings that need to be scheduled many months in advance. That said, if you are planning a small event with a few weeks’ notice, we may be able to provide a bucket or two.

How does DIY work?

DIY flowers are sold by the bucket. We fill each bucket with roughly 7-10 bunches (generally 10 stems each) in a mix of focal flowers, accent flowers, and foliage. Each bucket contains enough material to fill 5-7 wide mouth quart mason jars. During peony and dahlia seasons we also do single variety buckets that are priced by the stem count. Peonies are $2.00 - $4.00 a stem, depending on the variety and Dahlias are $1.50 - $3.50 a stem.

Pricing

Farmer’s Choice DIY Buckets ($70 each) are a great choice for folks with a flexible color palette seeking fresh, seasonal flowers with a rustic or wildflower look. You tell us whether you prefer bright sunny colors or more muted pastels, and we will fill your buckets with the best of what’s in bloom. All flowers are subject to tax, with an additional $5 per bucket deposit that is refunded to you when our buckets are returned to us.

Logistics

DIY buckets are available for pickup on the farm by appointment. We harvest and condition your flowers in our cooler so they are fresh and ready to arrange with when you pick them up. We strive to provide you with the freshest blooms possible, and we will provide you with information and tips on keeping your flowers happy, but we cannot be responsible for their freshness after pickup, that’s up to you!

AVAILABILITY

We offer a limited number of DIY flower buckets from May through mid-October. We limit the number of buckets per order, depending on the season. Please be sure to email us to check our availability for your date. Below are some Frequently Asked Questions about our DIY buckets.

FAQs & How To’s

HOW MANY DIY BUCKETS SHOULD I ORDER?

This depends mostly on what you plan to make with your DIY flowers, and a little bit on your arranging style. We fill each bucket with roughly 7-10 bunches (generally 10 stems each) with a mix of focal flowers, accent flowers, and foliage to arrange with. Each bucket contains enough material to fill 5-8 wide mouth quart mason jars. Use this as your guide. If you like a more sparse look, use the low end of our estimate, if you like a jam packed vase use the higher end. If you have large or wide containers you'll need more stems to fill them out.

Is DIY Right for Me?

Use this checklist to make sure you have everything you need for a great DIY experience.

Time. Do you have the time to come to the farm and pick up your flowers, and the time to create your own arrangements? Make sure you have a friend or family member who is willing and able to help with arranging and set up. Plan on picking your flowers up 1-2 days before your event and make sure to give yourself and your friends plenty of time to work with them, especially if you are new to flower arranging.

Materials. Do you have all of the tools and materials you need? Here are some of the tools and supplies you’ll need for arranging:
-Sharp clippers (a pair for everyone helping you)
-Clean vases (it's important that they are super clean because bacteria and dirt will clog flower stems and prevent them from taking up water)
-Any mechanics you’ll need for large or low containers (i.e. marbles, clear tape, chicken wire, or pin frogs)
-Floral tape, ribbon, and twine for DIY bouquets, and floral wire for DIY boutonnieres, corsages, and floral crowns
-A compost bins for your flower clippings

Enthusiasm & Creativity. Are you excited to create your own flowers, or do you have a friend or family member who is? What is your skill and confidence level working with flowers? We recommend watching a few basic tutorials on youtube and/or making a mock up.

HOW DO I KEEP MY FLOWERS FRESH?

DIY flowers also like to be stored in a cool room out of direct sunlight and wind. When you’re arranging with them make sure you’re putting them into clean containers with clean water. Dirt and bacteria clog up the stems and prevent them from taking up water. Make sure to remove any leaves that are below the waterline. It is a good idea to give the stems a fresh cut also. Once you’ve finished your arrangements store them in a cool room until needed. Make sure to check the water level in your containers and replenish as needed since the flowers will continue to drink.
